Conclusions

Investment into new structures and infrastructure is perceived by the citizens as something positive.

The great majority of citizens, 71 per cent of them, consider it something positive. Around 1/5 of the citizens believe it is something negative, while 9 percent of them think it is both positive and negative. Around a half of those surveyed who think it is something negative said that it would be better not to change towns and landscapes. Investment is somewhat more often perceived as something positive by the citizens of Stari Grad, Zadar, Dugi Rat and the Labin area.

The citizens believe that the local authorities can influence the way space is used. 14 per cent of them think that the local authorities have a crucial influence, while 37 per cent of them believe they have a big influence. On the other hand, those surveyed believe that the citizens have a small influence on the physical planning. 15 per cent of citizens believe they cannot have any influence, while 42 per cent of them think they can have a small influence. Although differences between locations are not statistically significant, Zadar stands out with a higher estimate of the influence of the local authorities, while Stari Grad stands out with a higher estimate of the citizens’ influence.

Almost 2/3 of citizens believe that a development reconciling the citizens’ interests with the protection of nature and the economical development interests can be realized only partially.

Almost 1/4 of them believe such a development is fully possible, while 12 per cent of them believe it is not possible at all.

The citizens think that architects and urban planners also have a strong influence on physical planning, although the average mark is slightly lower than the mark for the influence of the local authorities. 9 per cent of citizens believe that architects and urban planners have a crucial influence on physical planning, while 37 per cent of them believe that they have a big influence.

The influence of architects and urban planners received the worst mark from the citizens of Rab, i.e. for Goli Otok.

The citizens on seven locations believe that the physical planning of coastal towns is most influenced by investors and capital owners, and by the local authorities. Only a small number of those surveyed stated architects and urban planners as the group that influences physical planning the most.

On all locations, the great majority of citizens believes that old locations can be used as the basis for new development. The percentage of citizens who believe that the location can be used varies from 70 per cent on Krk to 95 per cent in Dubrovnik. The citizens of Rab somewhat prefer the use of Goli Otok for economic projects, while 42 per cent of them think it should become a memorial center.

On each location, more than half the citizens believe that towns or municipalities can initiate the use of old locations. In Labin, Dugi Rat and Omišalj, that percentage is around 55 per cent. The greatest faith that their city can initiate the project was shown by the citizens of Zadar.

The citizens of the Labin area would prefer the old mine as a museum showing how the mines worked (70 per cent).

The citizens of Krk are divided regarding the vision of the most appropriate content for the old quarry. 32 per cent of them believe it should include sport facilities, 31 per cent want entertainment for youth, 27 per cent want hotels and other tourist content. Significant numbers of those surveyed want a marina, and parks and a promenade.

The opinions on Goli Otok are also divided. 42 per cent of citizens believe Goli Otok should be used for alternative forms of tourism, 40 per cent want traditional forms of tourism, while 34 per cent believe it should be a memorial park.

The citizens of Zadar would prefer a university campus and sport contents.

The citizens of Dugi Rat believe the most appropriate solution for the former industrial complex site would be hotels (80 per cent). 38 per cent of them believe the site could be used for a marina.

The citizens of Stari Grad believe the most appropriate content for the old theater site would be premises continuing that tradition, i.e. premises for culture and art.

The citizens of Dubrovnik would prefer to turn the old hospital site into a university.
