The Project

The strategy is based on the reconstruction of the abandoned old hospital site by inserting new educational and public program in breathtaking Natural Park. The creation of a new cultural density and social structure should introduce New Intellectual Tourism where citizens and visitors should study, in this Arcadian environment, throughout whole year.

The Role In Space

The Gradac Park is a space within the urban tissue of Dubrovnik, combined with the green belt of the old hospital into a whole that somehow opposes the neighboring built area. This green oasis subtly protects the naturally winding shore from the urban zone, functioning as a green buffer providing a good balance between the built and free surfaces within the urban structure.

Zones

The entire area can be divided into three zones. The first goes along the road with scattered buildings within the green zone including elements dating back to the Renaissance, the second is the area of the Gradac Park, created in the 19th century, and the third is the site of today’s car park, which could become a modern park of the 21st century that should go well with the Mediterranean materials. The first and second zones would need an occasional replacement and removal of old trees and an improved shrubbery. The third zone is a space that should be developed as a new park, needing not only shrubbery, but also trees. The development of infrastructure and linking of all the contents would turn this site into an important element improving the city life.
