Stari Grad is the town at the island of Hvar, named after the Greek name Faros that in 384 B.C. came to the island and confronted with the native Illyrs. Faros was founded at the bottom of an ideal bay and in its vicinity there was a lot fertile land and enough water to drink. All this created the perfect conditions for the development of the contemporary city of Stari Grad, characterized by preserved nature, historical monuments, fascinating coast and developed tourism infrastructure.

In 1961 a theatre was built in Stari Grad on island Hvar. It was built at the coast and in the vicinity of the Town Hall. Initially, the theatre intended to function as a cinema during the winter period, when the pressure from a mass tourism is altered for the "emptiness" of every day life characteristic for the island and coastal communities.

Existing building is in its form, as well as function insufficient to anticipate demands for the good quality of life in a city of Stari Grad, creating an unarticulated form in Stari Grad’s cityscape and demonstrating a lack of public space that would enhance the social activities and additional education of citizens.

Though the process of reconstruction and reprogramming of the old theatre building as one of the lighthouses, a project aims to create a new form of a public space that would as a new civic centre for the city of Stari Grad accommodate existing and accelerate development of new forms of civic activities.

This location will be the most important “small town” program over the next years. The old socialist bunker theater should be transformed into a “glowing” multimedia center. This project depends almost exclusively on the quality of the architectural intervention, which should motivate local forces to start the realization. On the conceptual level, the project should resolve the issue of using the architecture of a new layer (the 21st century) in the small towns of the Adriatic. The project certainly needs to define the “communication” of the building with its immediate surroundings and its internal hybrid programs.
